WebI don't think that The Swimmer seeks to explain to those things. I find the film to be somewhat impressionist (using the 2a definition here) in that it's not necessarily trying to portray reality. In most ways, it looks to be reality, but there are oddities to peoples' behavior, some of the plot points, and the film's final breakdown scene.
